FOR the primary time on Earth, a managed fusion reaction has generated extra energy than was used to kickstart it. Reaching the milestone offers actual hope that fusion reactors can ship on the decades-long promise of ample, clear power that, in response to the Atomic Energy Commission in 1954, will likely be “too cheap to meter”.
With 100 years of science behind the consequence and many years of engineering nonetheless forward, fusion will likely be – if we get there – maybe one of the best instance of coordinated, long-term effort by people and the best pay-off ever obtained.
