Scientists notice concerted four-electron discount of nitrosobenzene

Nitrosobenzene (PhNO) is implicated in a spread of chemical transformations. A plethora of transition metallic complexes can activate PhNO in numerous coordination modes, and electron-rich low-valent metallic facilities can induce discount of PhNO.

However, the functionalization of PhNO by way of the synergistic interplay of metallic and ligand remains to be unclear.

Recently, Prof. Ye Shengfa’s group from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in collaboration with Prof. Qu Jingping’s group from Dalian University of Technology, achieved facile conversion of nitrosobenzene to aniline below by a thiolate-bridged diiron advanced.

This research was printed in Journal of the American Chemical Society on Oct. 7.

By utilizing X-ray single crystal diffraction, 57Fe Mössbauer , and infrared spectroscopies coupled with density practical principle calculations, the researchers proposed an unprecedented activation pathway of PhNO induced by a thiolate-bridged diiron advanced.

Such a change realized concerted but asynchronous four-electron discount of PhNO to selectively furnish benzenesulfinamide, for which the 4 electrons all got here from the bridging thiolate ligand, whereas the iron heart solely served as an electron shuttle. The ensuing sulfinamide ligand had a larger propensity to bear additional discount to launch aniline in contrast with PhNO.

“The formation of sulfinamide accelerates degradation of PhNO to aniline, which helps to understand the metabolism of PhNO in ,” stated Prof. ye.
