We don’t necessarily have to watch science fiction movies or even read books to discover amazing planet worlds. One look at the stars is enough to stretch the limits of our imagination. In this blog we discuss the 20 strangest planets ever found.

Gliese 436 b Planet

A hot cold planet. The laws of physics have no meaning in this star system. Gliese 436 b [ sometimes called GJ 436 b ] is a Neptune-sized exoplanet orbiting the red dwarf Gliese 436.

Gliese 436 b was discovered in August 2004 by R. Paul Butler and Geoffrey Marcy of the Carnegie Institute of Washington and University of California, Berkeley, respectively, using the radial velocity, transit method.

In June 2015, scientists reported that the atmosphere of Gliese 436 b was evaporating, leading to an enormous cloud round the planet and, due to radiation from the host star, an extended trailing tail 14×106 km (9×106 mi) long.

One orbit round the star takes only about two days, 15.5 hours. Gliese 436 b’s orbit is probably going misaligned with its star’s rotation.The planet has a smaller distance to its star than mercury to the sun.

So temperatures of up to 824 degrees fahrenheit prevail on the surface of gliese 436 b. But the amazing thing is that the icy surface of the planet never melts. Astronomers assume that the enormous gravity of gliese 436 bpresses the ice into its solid form and thus withstands any temperature.

Gliese 581c Planet

An earth-like planet. Only 20 light-years from us we find gliese 581C. Discovered is done by Stéphane Udry et al. Discovery site is La Silla Observatory and discovery date is 4 April 200724 April 2007 (announced).

Method of detection is Radial velocity. This earth twin, orbits its star at a distance of about 6 million miles. In comparison the distance between the earth and our sun is a full 90 million miles because of this it’s boiling hot at least on one side of the planet.

Gliese 581c

But gliese 581C draws its orbit in a bound rotation and therefore has a dark side on this half turned away from the star one would freeze to an icicle within seconds. But there is hope a relatively narrow strip appears to have temperatures that make life possible.

A message to the planet was sent in 2008, in 2029 the message should arrive and wewill learn if perhaps higher life exists on gliese 581c.

GJ 1214B Planet

The water world. It is a super-Earth, meaning it is larger than Earth but is significantly smaller [ in mass and radius ] than the gas giants of the Solar System.

This sounds almost like a planet from star wars and appearances are not deceiving. As far as we know GJ 1214B is a planet, that has not a single area of land and consists of one vast ocean.

Observations with the hubble telescope suggest that the planet’s atmosphere consists largely of water vapour and reinforced the assumption of a water world. The ocean planet is located about 40 light years from earth and is many times larger.

Discovered by the MEarth project and investigated further by the HARPS spectrograph on ESO’s 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla, GJ1214b is the second super-Earth exoplanet for which astronomers have determined the mass and radius, giving vital clues about its structure. It is also the first super-Earth around which an atmosphere has been found. The exoplanet, orbiting a small star only 40 light-years away from us, thus opens dramatic new perspectives in the quest for habitable worlds. The planet, GJ1214b, has a mass about six times that of Earth and its interior is likely mostly made of water ice. It appears to be rather hot and surrounded by a thick atmosphere, which makes it inhospitable for life as we know it on Earth.

HD 189 733 b Planet

Here it rains glass. HD 189733 b is an exoplanet approximately 64.5 light-years away from the Solar System. It is in the Vulpecula constellation.

This blue planet has very unusual weather. It’s also larger than jupiter the largest planet in our solar system. The atmosphere is unique and consists largely of silicate atoms and particles. The winds here travel at speeds of more than 2000 miles per hour traveling around the entire planet in just a few hours.

HD 189 733 b

So it would not necessarily be pleasant here. Especially if you consider one thing due to the unique weather and atmospheric composition it rains glass at regular intervals on this planet. Hubble Space Telescope confirm the presence of water vapor, neutral oxygen and also the organic compound methane.

Cancri e Planet

The planet made of diamond. Its distance to earth is 40 light years. Is an exoplanet in the orbit of its Sun-like host star 55 Cancri A. Cancri e was discovered on 30 August 2004.

Cancri e is about twice the size of our blue planet but has eight times the mass and two times the density. The mass of the planet consists to an extremely high portion of carbon. In February 2016, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope had detected hydrogen and helium.

This super earth orbits its sun from a small distance in only 18 hours. Due to temperatures of over 7500 degrees fahrenheit and an enormously high pressure thesurface of cancri e probably consists mostly of diamonds.

WASP-12b Planet

The planet that absorbs light. WASP-12b is an extrasolar planet orbiting the star WASP-12. On 3 December 2013, scientists working with the Hubble Space Telescope reported detecting water in the atmosphere of the exoplanet.

Extreme heat prevails on the surface of this planet even on the side facing away from its star temperatures of over 5400 degrees fahrenheit are generated. WASP-12b is the darkest of all exoplanets known so far.

It completely swallows the light from its star. The carbon content of the planet is located within its atmosphere, in the form of carbon monoxide and methane. Some even calling WASP-12b a “diamond planet”.

PSR J1719-1483B Planet

This planet orbits a neutron star. But what do we mean by a neutron star and magnetar? This is an extremely compact star just about the size of a small city.

With diameter of just under 12 miles this pulsar is tiny and yet has a higher mass than our sun. This also contributes to the short rotation time of 2 hours that it takes planet pcr to orbit its neutron star. The planet is composed of oxygen and carbon.

PSR J1719-1483B

Firstly PSR J1719−1438 was observed in 2009 by a team headed by Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. And PSR J1719−1438 b orbits its host star with a period of 2.17 hours. It is the densest world ever discovered, at nearly 20 times the density of Jupiter.

GLIESE 504b – The pink planet.

GLIESE 504B is bursting with color and brown dwarf. It is in the solar analog 59 Virginis { GJ 504 }.

This magenta world does not get its unusual appearance by chance. We’re talking about a relatively newly formed celestial body that still glows inwardly. So there are extreme temperatures on the surface of GLIESE 504B. And this although it is in an unreachable distance from its sun.

OGLE-2005-BLG-390 Lb Planet

A frozen wasteland. It is revolving a star OGLE-2005-BLG-390 Lb, which is 3,300 light years from Earth near the center of the Milky Way.

The planet is about five times Earth’s mass. At an unreachable distance of 20000 light years we find an ice world unlike any other. Surface temperature is around 50 K or −220 °C; −370 °F. To be exact this wasteland is located in the constellation of sagittarius and orbits a red dwarf.

OGLE-2005-BLG-390 Lb

OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb orbits it is star every 3,500 days or about 10 years. Red dwarfs are particularly small faint stars. On the ice planet blood would literally freeze in our veins. The temperature on the surface is 428 degrees below zero. However under the ice layer, could be an ocean which might remain unfrozen due to the high temperatures inside the planet.

J1407b Planet

A saturn on drugs. If you think saturn has the largest ring system you should really take a look at J1407B. This planet is not called saturn on steroids for nothing.

J1407B’S ring system exceeds saturn’s by 640 times. The exoplanet is located in the constellation of centaur, over 434 light years away from earth. If this unique world were to take the place of saturn its rings would dominate our sky and be more visible than earth’s moon.

TrES-4b Planet

An enormous gas world. It is one of the largest exoplanets ever found, after WASP-12b, WASP-17b. At an enormous distance of 1400 light years this giant is located in the hercules constellation.

The gas world reaches a circumference almost twice that of Jupiter. At a distance of just over four million miles from its star the planet takes only three days to orbit. Extreme temperatures of almost 2200 degrees fahrenheit make life on the gas planet unthinkable. By the way the density of the giant is only equal to the density of a cork.

HAT-P-7b Planet

Here it reigns rubies and sapphires. This exoplanet orbits in a bound rotation around its sun. On the dark side there is an enormous occurrence of aluminum oxides these corundums also known as rubies and sapphires replace rain and snow. Since HAT-P-7b regularly experiences particularly strong storms it’s not unlikely that the sapphires and rubies are distributed over the entire surface of the world.

HD 106 906 b Planet

This world has a long distance relationship with its star. The gas giant orbits at a distance of an astonishing 59 billion miles from its star. By comparison neptune the farthest planet from the sun has a distance of just under 3 billion miles.

Based on the star’s luminosity and temperature, the system is estimated to be about 13±2 million years old. And despite this distance it’s quite warm in the heart of the gas planet 2700 degrees fahrenheit is the average temperature here. How these temperatures come about remains unclear.

HD 106 906 b

KEPLER-438b Planet

A true earth twin. It is a confirmed near Earth sized exoplanet. If a planet is in the habitable zone the probability of life is relatively high. It orbits on the inner side of the habitable zone of a red dwarf star, Kepler-438.

This star is about 472.9 light-years from Earth. Situated in the constellation Lyra. This planet is likely to be rocky. Not only does its distance from its star provide for the appropriate conditions but the size and the mass are consistent and nearly identical with that of the earth.

This is an Earth-sized planet, an exoplanet that has a mass and radius close to that of Earth. Kepler-438b orbits its star every 35 days and 5 hrs. And that’s not all, not by a long shot in fact water is suspected on the surface of KEPLER-438 No other known planet has shown such similarity with the earth.

WASP-17b Planet

A real rebel. It is situated in the constellation Scorpius and it’s orbiting the star WASP-17. This exoplanet is one of the largest ever discovered and weighs half as much as jupiter.

The Hubble Space Telescope reported detecting water in the atmosphere of the exoplanet. It’s radius between 1.5 and 2 times that of Jupiter. And about half the mass of Jupiter. But what makes it special is its direction of motion.

WASP-17 b moves in the opposite direction to its star that is in retrograde orbit. Exoplanetary sodium in the atmosphere of the WASP-17 has been detected.

A super-earth. It is orbiting G type star i.e. Kepler 10. It is discovered in May 2011. At a distance of 540 light-years from earth this unique planet orbits its sun kepler-10. A year here lasts only 45 days so a season passes in only 11.

The planet’s orbital inclination is 89.65º. Kepler-10c is twice the size of our planet but weighs as much as 17 earths. How such a massive planet was formed is still unclear.

2MASS J2126-8140

A planet in the largest known solar system. Discovery date is 2009 (as a brown dwarf), 2016 (as an exoplanet). Other planets without a star in principle no but this exotic finding comes close that’s because it’s located about 600 billion miles away from its star until now it was assumed that such a thing was not possible but the possibilities in our universe are as unlimited as the universe itself. It has both longest and widest orbit.

As black as ash. Anything but colorful TrES-2b reflects less than one percent of the light emitted by its star. that is less light reflection than from a lump of coal. And it’s this absorption of light that creates the red haze that surrounds the planet.

TrES-2b devilish gloomy and as black as ash. It is orbiting the star GSC 03549-02811. Which is located 750 light years away from the Solar System. Surface gravity is 3.284±0.016 g. TrES-2 system is a binary star system.

PSR B1620-26 b

It is an exoplanet located approximately 12,400 light-years from Earth. Situated in the constellation of Scorpius. It’s unofficial nickname is “Methuselah”. As old as the universe itself. Not quite 14 billion years ago the big bang created the universe.

This planet reached its final form about one billion years later and is therefore more than twice as old as the earth. So there are more than one hundred thousand extinct stars in the immediate vicinity of the planet.

PSR B1620-26 b

The globe is in a circumbinary orbit around the two stars. Circumbinary orbit means a orbit in which the planet revolve around two stars instead of one. It’s mass is 2.627 times that of Jupiter. And it orbits at a distance of 3.4 billion km.


The lava planet. It is orbit around star Kepler-78. This planet was discovered in 2013. From the Kepler space telescope. It has much in common with earth its mass and size are not dissimilar.

And yet there is an enormous difference. Main point is Kepler-78b is remarkably close to its sun at a distance of less than 550000 miles. So not only is it extremely warm with an average temperature of 3686 degrees fahrenheit but the planet’s surface also resembles the interior of a volcano.

These are just a few of the many strange planets that exist in our universe. Kepler-78b is most similar to larger high-density, hot exoplanets. Examples Kepler-10b, CoRoT-7b and Kepler-36b.
