The new speculation, referred to as “cosmological coupling,” argues that because the universe expands outward after the Big Bang, all objects with mass develop with it too. And black holes, as among the most large objects to exist, develop essentially the most.
This speculation stems from the gravitational ripples in space-time that happen when two large black holes get locked in orbit, spiral inward and collide. Since 2015, scientists on the (LIGO) and Virgo interferometer, that are designed to detect these gravitational waves, have noticed many of those black hole mergers.
