Dates and Events
August 4
It is an important date as it shows the New Moon. Due to New Moon, this is the best time to observe the faint objects in the night sky. The absence of moonlight makes the sky darker. When this incredible thing happens, stars and other celestial bodies look extra bright in the sky.
August 11
It is an important date for meteor shower lovers; on this date, the peak of the Perseid meteor shower will happen. The Perseids are one of the most honoured meteor showers of the year, renowned for its luminous meteors and remarkably high activity rate.
This year, the viewing conditions are favorable. The Perseid meteor shower will be active from July 17 to August 24. The Moon sets by 11:30 pm local time. Meteor activity picks up from then until dawn. Find a dark place away from city lights and pollution for the best view.
August 14
Jupiter and Mars will have a close encounter called a conjunction. Get ready to witness the two planets positioned just a third of a degree apart. “We understand that this measurement is smaller than the width of the full Moon, which can make it seem insignificant in comparison.” Look for them in the eastern sky before sunrise. This is a rare event and a treat for skywatchers.
August 19
It will definitely bring the full moon. This particular full moon is also referred to as the Sturgeon Moon. “It is named after the abundant large fish that are easily caught during this time of year, contributing to a bountiful harvest.” The Full Moon is a great time to observe the Moon’s surface with a telescope.
August 20
Mark your calendars for August 20, when you’ll have the chance to witness the Moon seemingly chasing Saturn across the sky. The pair will rise in the east shortly after dark. The two of them will embark on a journey heading west until the break of dawn. It is truly a breathtaking scene to witness.
August 27
August 27 is another special day. Imagine gazing at the night sky and witnessing the beautiful formation of the crescent Moon, Mars, and Jupiter coming together as a captivating trio. Look for them in the eastern sky in the hour before sunrise. This is the best chance to see three celestial bodies close together.
Lagoon Nebula
You can observe the Lagoon Nebula for all months. Lagoon Nebula is a stellar nursery located in the constellation Sagittarius. “This can be found in close proximity to the star pattern referred to as ‘The Teapot.’ The Lagoon Nebula is similar in size and brightness to the Orion Nebula. It is a cauldron of star formation located about 4,000 light years away. Use binoculars or a telescope to get a better view.
August is a great month for skywatching. The balmy summer evenings create a cozy environment for outdoor activities. Regardless of your level of expertise in astronomy, there is an opportunity for everyone to find something of interest. Mark your calendar and enjoy the celestial show.
“Be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave.” Clear skies are essential for a good viewing experience. Your eyes will take time to adjust in the darkness, so be patient. This will help you see fainter objects in the sky.
